ASP Assignment7 -The Desert Island-

We discussed what should we take 12 items to the island. My friends said very interesting opinions, therefore I enjoyed very much!!

I think we should take

pot, knife, rope, matches, gun/ammunition, fishing pole, first-aid kid, chain saw, toothbrushes/toothpaste, TV, and book.

My friend said that we should take only the item to enjoy our life, because we can live without some items by using nature creatively. It's so interesting opinion, however I cannot make some useful goods from nature. We need at least pot, knife, rope, matches, gun/ammunition, and first-aid kid to live in. Pot can use to cook and to store water. Others are not so important. I like toothbrushing, therefore I need toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The most useful approach to use in critically analyzing The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway is the Fisherman as Artist. That's because this novel is strongly influenced by Hemmingway's experience. Hemmingway loves fishing and seek the romance in the sea, therefore the old man behaves as artist. For example, the old man go on fishing in spite of he cannot catch fish for eighty four days, and he fight with the big fish for a long time. Moreover he is proud of that he is a fisherman. He respect DiMaggio whose father is a fisherman. It is difficult to understand why the old man is particular about fishing. By using the approach that the fisher man as artist, however, reader can understand why the old man run a risk.

ASP Assignment6 -P&D practice-

We practiced P&D. We didn't have enough time to prepare for presentation, however, everyone did very interesting presentation. It was difficult for me to ask a question because I concentrated on listening English. I couldn't afford to think. I have to be a good audience!! In our group, we had active discussion. We had complex and interesting topic. For example, Japan is good democracy or not. I don't remember why we discussed this topic, however, I enjoyed this discussion. I haven't done my presentation yet, therefore, I am very nervous. However I will do my best!!

We learned how to use google document to present some topics.

My thesis was ''chocolate.'' It was difficult for me to find a likely movie, so I thought it is important to select good thesis. And I enjoyed presentation, because everyone select very interesting topics, for example "natto" and "disney." It is difficult for me to use computer. However, by using computer, we can watch movie. It is effective way to use movie in presentation, because audience can understand a topic easily.

The main characters in Old Man and the Sea are Santiago, a fisherman and Manolin, a boy who helps him. Three adjectives that describe Santiago are old, confident, and kind. The reason why he is old is that according to OMS, he is thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck, and the author call Santiago an old man. The reason why he is confident is that he went to the sea alone, even though he was old. I think that he want to show Manolin that he was strong by fishing big fish by himself. The reason why he is kind is that Santiago suggest to Manolin that he should stay with a lucky boat. Santiago thought about Manolin very well. Three adjectives that describe Manolin are kind, faithful, and lucky. The reason why he is kind is that he took care of Santiago very much. For example, Manolin said to Santiago "Keep warm old man," when Santiago was going to bed, and Manolin made dinner for Santiago. The reason why he is faithful is that he obey his papa's advice obediently . And Manolin said that "I must obey papa." Manolin is a good child. The reason why he is lucky is that he has a lucky boat. Only by changing a boat, he could caught good fishes.

ASP Assignment5

We learned how to do P&D.

There are three points to do good P&D, content, structure, and delivery. I didn't know about P&D, so this class was interesting for me. Most interesting thing is that we have to introduce our backgrounds and connect it and topic. I didn't think it is important to introduce our backgrounds. However, if a lecturer don't introduce his background, I may feel some strange because I don't know why he choose the topic. And it was good practice for me to catch audience's eyes. I always be shy, when I speak in front of a lot of audiences.

We may have opportunity to do P&D, not only in university but also in society. So I have to improve our P&D skill!!

ASP Assignment4 -The desert survival problem-

We discussed the desert survival problem. My total score is 76, and my group score is 26. If I was left all alone in the desert, I would die soon. So I'm very happy to have good friends!!

There are not big differences between our group's opinion and Alonzo W Pond's opinion. I thought that most important thing to survive is something to drink or eat. So Vodka and bottle of salt are useful. However, my friends told me that alcohol and salt absorb water. I was so surprised! And I don't know how to use cosmetic mirror. However, my friends told me how to use it. That's critical thinking!! According to Alonzo W Pond, in fact, in sunlight a simple mirror can generate 5 to 7 million candle power of light. I strongly realized that to have correct knowledge and to think critically is very important.

ASP Assignment3 -Who Should We Help First?-

In our group, we consider in only their age. That is because it is not fair to consider in their background. We cannot know their future. For example, Geoff Tims who is businessman, owns a factory that employ 500 people may die soon after he helped, or John Jones who is very gifted musician may not exercise his musical skills. However, children have more potential than adult, because they probably live longer than adult in general. Therefor, we should help younger person in turn. When I listened to other groups opinion and critical thinking, however, I was very surprised, because I didn't try to think how to help everyone. I should have think many sides of view like physically or mentally.

"The shocking way to run effective meetings !"

It's so funny . However, I don't agree this way. Students should participate in the discussion actively. We have to learn how to think critically and how to speak clearly by taking part in a discussion. If we discuss that shocking way, we cannot improve these skills.

"Ken Tanaka fluently Japanese"

I didn't notice we can speak Japanese fluently by saying "shee..." or "hee..."! It's so interesting. Japanese people often use these kinds of words, because we hesitate to response clearly like "yes" or "no". I often use these words unconsciously. By watching that video,however, I notice that it's so funny. I try not to use theses kinds of words in order to make myself understood to everyone clearly.

ASP Assignment1 -Bad Discussion and Good Discussion-

Bad discussion

Some people don't participate in the discussion. One person isn't interested in the discussion, and the other person hesitate to express own opinion. Group leader don't give a topic clearly. Some people participate in the discussion actively, however one person express own opinion very sharply and the other person express opposite opinion. Therefor, the discussion don't proceed smoothly.

Good discussion

Group leader give a topic clearly and give each person a chance that they express own opinion. Everyone participate in the discussion and express own opinion clearly, and their opinion is based on the opinion that other people have expressed already. Group leader come to a conclusion, therefor we can make sense the discussion.

In our discussion, we don't choose the group leader, therefor we can't proceed the discussion smoothly. Not only choosing a group leader but also preparing for a discussion is important. In good discussion, they have the outline of their own opinion, and express own opinion flexibly. I have to practice these points in our discussion consciously.

The thesis statement I've chosen for Essay 1 is the following: students can study more effectively by learning how to refresh themselves in various ways including taking a nap, doing exercise, eating some foods.

How do "good"college teacherspresent information?

According to Meiland, a good college teacher presents information in the following way.
They present some information, in the sense of "what is currently believed." In fact, a large part college work consists of discussing and examining the basis of current beliefs. However, the author says that a certain important distinction is the distinction between a descriptive statement and a normative statement. He says that a good teacher should present statements that are partly descriptive and partly normative. I agree with his opinion, because we should have a curiosity and try to think deeply by myself, and I think that these activities would develop our potential.
